History and Uses
Azurite has been revered by many ancient cultures including the Egyptians, Greeks, Romans, Chinese, Mayans and Native Americans. They all traditionally used this stone to connect with the Spirit realm. Its name is derived from an old Persian word lazhward meaning blue colour. For thousands of years it has been commonly utilised for its vivid blues, ground to powder and added in both paint and dyes. This practice was prominent in medieval European paintings in the 12th century.
Geological Description
Azurite is a copper carbonate mineral with a hardness of 3.5 to 4. It frequently appears in combination with Malachite, another copper carbonate. Azurite is found in Australia, China, Chile, Russia and the USA.
