Howlite Crystal Healing Properties
Howlite is believed to be a calming stone, helping to relieve rage by absorbing your anger, or anger directed toward you, from others. As such, it may also aid with insomnia caused by an overactive mind. Placed on the third eye, it may help you to meditate, connect with higher spiritual consciousness and access past lives. It may be used to calm turbulent emotions which have their origins in a past life.
History and Uses
Howlite was named after Henry How, a Canadian chemist, geologist, and mineralogist. He first identified it in 1868, in Nova Scotia, where it was found by gypsum miners.
As this stone is porous, it is often dyed to replicate Turquoise, Red Coral or Lapis Lazuli. The dyed variety, is called Magnesite and marketed as Blue Howlite or Turquentine. It can be distinguished from other stones it was dyed to imitate under UV light because it gives off a slight coloured fluorescent glow.
The natural variety White Howlite, is also known as “white turquoise”, “white buffalo turquoise,” or “white buffalo stone”. This variety is often used in carvings or beaded jewellery.
Geological Description
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide mineral with a hardness of 3.5. It is rare to find it in crystal form. It most often occurs as opaque white irregular shaped nodules, with grey streaks. It is found in California and Nova Scotia.
