The oldest records of Peridot date back to 1500 BC. It was mined in Zabargad, an island in the Egyptian Red Sea. It was considered a symbol of the Sun from Ancient Times to the Middle Ages. Apparently, according to a Greek manuscript, it confers royal dignity to its bearer.
Interestingly enough, it was a favourite of the ancient Egyptians too. They used to crush it into a powder to treat asthma, relieve thirst and heat and to ward off evil spells. Peridot is also known as Olivine and Chrysolite. It varies in colour from yellow to brownish-olive green depending on the amount of iron in the crystal. Gem quality Peridot is relatively rare so it is considered a precious stone. Peridot is one of only two gemstones formed deep in the magma of the earth, it is brought to the surface through volcanic activity. Olivine can sometimes be found in pallasite meteorites.

Peridot is a magnesium iron silicate mineral with a hardness of 7. Its crystal system is orthorhombic and it usually forms in short, compact prisms. Important sources of Peridot are found in Pakistan, Burma, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, and the USA.
